Vacationing at our luxury cabins over the July 4th Holiday means you have the best seat in Cashiers NC, for the annual fireworks show over Lake Glenville. All you have to do it sit back, relax and “ooo and ahh” over the spectacular display sparkling across the lake waters.

More than a decade ago some friends decided to shoot off fireworks in the center of Lake Glenville, and today that impromptu display has grown to a professional fireworks show attracting visitors and locals as they celebrate America’s birthday.

Put on by the Friends of Lake Glenville, Fireworks at the Point begins at 9 p.m. July 4 and lasts about 25 minutes.

Other area events you might want to work into your Independence Day celebration schedule include:

  • The Highlands Rotary Club hosts a Fourth of July Cookout from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Community Building and at the ballpark on Hickory Street. The Rubber Duck Derby begins at 1 p.m. at Mill Creek. Read more about this event.
  • Celebrate the 4th at The Bascom, a center for visual arts in Highlands. Bring a picnic and enjoy dinner plus views of the 6-acre Bascom campus. El Azteca Mexican Restaurant will have food and margaritas available for purchase, and Chill – A Highlands Treatery will have frozen yogurt and cupcakes for sale.
  • Patriotic Concert at 8 p.m. July 4 at First Presbyterian Church of the Highlands featuring bagpiper Dave Landis, Larry Black on trumpet, Angie Jenkins on pipe organ and the Highlands Male Chorus.
  • Fireworks on the Green is set for July 5 with a massive fireworks display and live music by The Extraordinaires beginning at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free; bring your chairs and blankets. The Farmers Market and On the Side BBQ will have food available for purchase.

If you’re thinking of setting off your own fireworks around Lake Glenville, make sure you follow North Carolina laws regarding fireworks. A law enacted in 2010 requires anyone discharging or operating pyrotechnics or proximate explosives to attend a training course and earn an operator license. For more information, check with the local law enforcement agency or the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
